We depend on our coastal ecosystems to feed us, to foster biodiversity, filter water, and protect us from climate disasters. And yet, we take our oceans for granted as an endless supply of food, a highway for global trade and a dumping ground for waste. Our oceans and shorelines are threatened by the rise in industrial fishing, plastic pollution, and development projects that destroy the very ecosystems that help us to mitigate the impacts of rising seas and violent storms. How are the food choices we make connected to the health of our oceans, our coastal ecosystems and our environment? What are local responses to these challenging issues? How can alternative media projects help to foster awareness of coastal resilience? In this talk, Liz Miller will make the connection between a vegan lifestyle and the challenges of our shorelines. She will present media initiatives such as theshorelineproject.org – an alternative media project that features the efforts of educators, artists, scientists, city planners and youth organizations from around the world who are working together to confront complex coastal concerns with persistence and imagination.
